Both robots do well cleaning up surface debris from carpets and hard floors and they're very adept at moving around furniture and other obstacles. iAdapt navigation software makes smart maps of your home that aid the i3+ EVO to navigate and clean in a manner that maximizes efficiency. However, unlike the i7+ or other top rated robots we evaluated, the i3+ doesn't have obstacle-avoidance capabilities which means it can be stuck on things like power cords or socks, and may have issues in navigating through transitions between surfaces like from hardwood to rug.

iRobot recommends you clear out areas where the i3+ EVO will vacuum prior to when you use it, including putting away any clutter or toys it may encounter. It's also recommended to keep the dust bin and filter clear so they don't become clogged with dirt. If the i3+ EVO's internal bin is filled or the battery is empty, it returns to its docking station and automatically emptying its debris into the station's external dustbin and continues cleaning where it began. The battery's lifespan is around an hour-and-a-half of continuous use. It takes about three hours to fully charge.

2. Roomba from iRobot

The iRobot i7+ is the top model in iRobot's flagship line, and it comes with the latest technology. It's self-charging and self-navigating. the most important feature of all -- it has self-emptying bins that eliminate one of the most important sources of maintenance for any robot auto vacuum.

The Roomba I7+ can make rooms more efficient maps using Imprint Smart Mapping. It also works with iRobot Home to schedule cleaning jobs, and you can control your robot via the app or via voice.

In our tests, the i7+ was more agile and faster than our second-placed model and the eufy RoboVac G30, and it took large pieces of pet hair from all surface types including carpeting. The main advantage it has over the Eufy is its self-emptying bin which eliminates the main sources of maintenance and reduces the cost of maintenance.

We were also awestruck by the i7+'s integration with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant AI services, which we used to instruct the robot to start, stop or pause its cleaning session and move around the room and vacuum an area. The iRobot Home App made it easy to connect the i7+ with these services. When connected, we were able to give the i7+ voice commands, such as "Hey Alexa, vacuum the master bedroom." The iRobot Home App also offers options for managing i7+ settings and monitoring the performance.

3. Dyson Cyclone V10

In a world of vacuums that are cordless and are like minivans and buses, this tiny Dyson model feels like an old-fashioned sports car. It is powerful enough to replace a traditional stand-up vacuum in most homes, but it is also compact enough to fit on a bookcase or coffee table.

The V10 is powered with a 7-cell energy-dense Lithium-ion battery that can provide power without fading for 60 minutes. Its sophisticated whole-machine filtration system captures allergens and expels clean air back into your home. The cleaning head is specially designed to drive bristles made of nylon that are stiff into carpet to suck up large crumbs and fine dust. It comes with three suction modes that can be adapted to the task. It quickly switches from floor vac to handheld vacuum, and then back to automatic floor cleaners.

This model also has an accessory dock that can charge to 100% in about 3.5 hours and provides easy access to two attachments and the clip for a wand. This is a huge improvement over the older Dysons, which take a long time to charge and are difficult to store.

The biggest issue with the V10 is its sluggish run time. As CR's tests show, its marketing claims of up to 60 minutes are a bit misleading. This is a common, not exceptional, battery-powered cordless vacuum's run time. This is still enough to clean most of a home that's average size however, it's not enough to get every single area (though an additional run-through often does the trick). This model has its own advantages however: it's light and more mobile than previous Dysons cordless models, and its vacuuming ability is noticeable superior on carpets with low pile.

4. iRobot Roomba 694

The 694 is a standard robot vacuum that's an excellent choice for those who don't have a lot of money to invest in the latest model of robot. It's capable of sucking up all kinds of debris in our tests, and it often goes over the same areas several times to ensure a thorough clean. The flat front of the unit allows it reach into corners and along the edges of walls and walls, which is a nice feature.

Its smart navigation system uses iAdapt to stay clear of obstacles and navigate your home, but it isn't equipped with the ability to map that comes with more sophisticated models such as our top selections and the i3+ EVO and j7+ series. It may get stuck on phone cords or low furniture and will often run out of power before returning to its original location.

In our tests, the Jet Bot AI+ excelled on hard floors and dealt with dog hair (on carpet) quite well, clearing up 86 percent of it. It did not do well in avoiding taller items such as socks or cords. This was disappointing. It's priced higher than other models we've tested, and this could be a problem for some shoppers.
